In case you haven’t noticed our Pleasant Valley Church mission is all about a life changing relationship with Jesus Christ. So that is why we’re consistently highlighting Sunday + One tactic. The Scripture clearly states that we are to “put to death whatever belongs to our sinful nature”. These + One environments for one thing are designed to put to death some things and bring to life other things in our lives. We want everyone in our church family to sign up for murder and life!
I’ve never seen a sign up sheet at church for sinning. You know, something like, “Please sign up to be selfish every day this week,” or “Don’t miss the retreat focusing on learning the ‘7 Habits of Very Lazy Men,'” or “You have got to go to the ‘Women of Fake’ conference next weekend in Las Vegas!” People don’t need to sign up for what comes naturally. The Bible teaches that we act sinfully by our nature. It’s our default setting! [See Romans 7:15-23.]
If our goal is total participation for everyone, then sign-ups to sin would work. Actually, we wouldn’t even need to sign up, because we are all well-endowed as it is to keep on sinning, with or without the support of one another!
Since our goal isn’t to stay in the cycle of sin, but to experience God’s Kingdom come and His will done here on earth, we must continually give a death notice to our selfish, rebellious egos and focused lives. The local church is given the impossible task of helping people put to death the deeds of their flesh and to live lives full of the Holy Spirit. [see all 13 letters in the Bible written by Paul!]
Our Pleasant Valley Church mission is “Leading one another into a life-changing relationship with Jesus Christ.” What we mean is that we want to intentionally provide and invite one another into environments where we can support one another to do God’s will in our lives. This necessitates us intentionally putting to death the deeds of our sinful nature.
So yes, our church ministry strategy includes murder!
The Apostles Paul and Peter’s prescription for a local church included the mindset and action of putting to death the deeds of the flesh. Here are a few for you to meditate on and apply to your life:
For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. Romans 8:13
Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. Colossians 3:5
Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions but for the will of God. 1 Peter 4:1-2
For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit…. 1 Peter 3:18
I love that in Christ we have a God who died for our sin for us so we could have a chance to truly live free and meaningful lives through His death.
I’m dead serious… Get it?… Sign up and begin dying so that you can truly live! Check out all the Sunday + One options on the pvwinona web site.
I love you all!
