WHAT IS BAPTISM?

From the EFCA Statement of Faith, on the Church: “We believe that the true church comprises all who have been justified by God’s grace through faith alone in Christ alone. They are united by the Holy Spirit in the body of Christ, of which He is the Head. The true church is manifest in local churches, whose

membership should be composed only of believers. The Lord Jesus mandated two ordinances, baptism and the Lord’s Supper, which visibly and tangibly express the gospel. Though they are not the means of salvation, when celebrated by the church in genuine faith, these ordinances confirm and nourish the believer.”

“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all

nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Matthew 28:18-20

WHAT IS THE MEANING OF BAPTISM?

It illustrates Christ’s burial and resurrection.

“Christ died for our sins…He was buried…and He rose again.” I Corinthians 15:3-4

“For when you were baptized, you were buried with Christ, and in baptism you were also raised with Christ.” Colossians 2:12

It illustrates my new life as a Christian.

“When someone becomes a Christian he becomes a brand new person inside. The old life has passed away and a new life has begun.” II Corinthians 5:17

“By our baptism then, we were buried with Him and shared His death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead…so also we may live a new life.” Romans 6:4

Baptism symbolizes our decision to accept what it means to be united with Jesus. Going down into the water pictures the death of the self and the rising up out of the water pictures the resurrection of the self to a new life now, and eternal life in the future.

Baptism does not make you a believer—it shows that you already believe. Baptism does not “save” you, only your faith in Christ does that. Baptism is like a wedding ring—it’s the outward symbol of the commitment you make in your heart.

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith…it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9

WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF BAPTISM TODAY? (CONCEPT VS. CEREMONY)

A crucial part of understanding baptism is to differentiate between the CONCEPT of baptism and the CEREMONY of baptism.

Ephesians 4:4-6 anchors the concept of baptism by mentioning seven “exclusives” in God’s reality: One body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father. Notice there is only ONE baptism. This is the one baptism that has not been mentioned until now, and is documented in:

I Corinthians 12:13 “For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.”

In this verse, three of the exclusives from Ephesians 4:4-6 are mentioned. It is obvious that the One Spirit places us together with One Lord in order to be identified with His Body [One Body]. This is the essence of baptism—the one and only baptism that qualifies one for eternal acceptance in heaven.

It was a spiritual transaction that you may not have been aware of, that moment you reached out to God and He reached out to you and placed His Spirit within you! The verse stated emphatically that ALL true believers have experienced this act of God. This is the spiritually true CONCEPT of baptism.

It is customary worldwide for a bride to wear an object or mark that identifies her as a bride. In our culture the wedding ring given at the ceremony is a symbol for all to see and know of her relationship. That ring is a symbol of a much higher value and truth than the ring itself. A bride is married [baptized] or placed into a relationship and remains married with or without her ring. Similarly, when we were placed in a relationship with our Lord God, Jesus the Christ, we experienced the spiritual marriage of that relationship.

Subsequently, believers elect to experience a public ceremony of baptism as a symbol of that relationship. It is a way to express the reality of your relationship with your Lord. You might say it is your ring to display to the world. It is also your affirmation of the faithful relationship you agreed to and became one with the Lord Jesus Christ.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO BE BAPTIZED?

To follow the example set by Christ.

“At that time Jesus came from Nazareth and was baptized by John in the river.” Mark 1:9

Because Christ commands it.

“Jesus said, ’Go then, to all the people everywhere and make disciples, baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit and teach them to obey everything I have commanded you.” Matthew 28:18-20

It demonstrates that I really am a believer.

“…many of the people who heard Him believed and were baptized.”

WHY BE BAPTIZED BY IMMERSION?

Because Jesus was baptized that way.

“As soon as Jesus was baptized, He went up out of the water.” Matthew 3:16

Every baptism in the Bible was by immersion.

“…then both Philip and the man went down into the water and Philip baptized him. When they came up out of the water…” Acts 8:38-39

The Greek word baptize (baptize) means “to immerse or dip in water.” It best symbolized a burial and resurrection.

Luther—I would have those who are to be baptized to be entirely immersed, as the work imports and the mystery signifies.

Calvin—The word baptize signifies to immerse. It is certain that immersion was the practice of the ancient church.

WHO SHOULD BE BAPTIZED?

Every person who has believed in Christ.

“Those who believe and accepted His message were baptized…” Acts 2:41

“Simon himself believed and was baptized.” Acts 8:13

“But when they believed Philip as he preached the Good News…and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.” Acts 8:12

At Pleasant Valley Church, we wait until our children are old enough to believe and understand the true meaning of baptism before we baptize them. Some churches practice a baptism of confirmation for children. This ceremony is intended to be a covenant between the parents and God on behalf of the child. The parents promise to raise their child in the faith until the child is old enough to make his own personal confession of Christ. This custom began about 300 years after the Bible was completed.

This is different from the baptism talked about in the Bible which was only for those old enough to believe. The purpose is to publicly confess your personal commitment to Christ. At Pleasant Valley Church, even though a person might have been “confirmed” as a child, we still practice believer’s baptism for those who have made a genuine and believable profession of faith.

WHEN SHOULD I BE BAPTIZED?

“Those who believe…were baptized…that day!” Acts 2:41

There is no reason to delay. As soon as you have received Christ into your life, you can and should be baptized. If you wait until you are perfect, you will never feel “good enough.” Pleasant Valley Church schedules baptism services periodically throughout the year. Please speak with a Pastor when you decide you would like to be baptized.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

We suggest that you wear medium colored clothing, pants or shorts, and slip off shoes, or bare feet. Clothing that retains a minimum amount of water is recommended. Please wear these clothes to the service and bring a change of clothes and a plastic bag for wet clothes for after the service. We will provide an area for changing and towels for your use.

WHAT HAPPENS AT A BAPTISM SERVICE?

Please meet in the back of the ministry center (by the kitchen window) 15 minutes before theservice begins. We will go over any questions, let you know the order of the baptisms, and pray. The service will begin with musical worship, followed by the message. Pastor Rick will then explain the meaning of baptism, focusing on the theme of Christ’s payment for our sins through His death on the cross. Another song will begin and the baptizing Pastor will enter the baptismal. You will come forward in the pre-determined order. You will enter the baptismal pool and your photo will then be shown. The Pastor will ask you a few simple questions. You can answer with a simple nod. Then he will immerse you into the water. You will only be under water for a few seconds. Then you will exit the pool and be handed a towel. Please walk behind the baptismal, and stay on the stage, where all who are baptized with gather. When all have been baptized, friends and family will be invited up to the stage.

Each person baptized will receive a photo of their baptism in the weeks following the celebration.

** Please change afterwards, in the bathrooms by the Library, and leave your wet towels in the tote provided in each bathroom.

The Annual Business Meeting will be on Sunday, March 25, right after second service. Members and regular attendees are strongly encouraged to attend. A twenty-minute meeting is promised! The BTZ and Preschool rooms will be remain open for childcare. Members will vote to affirm nominees for the Governance Board, Jeff Peterson and Lee Hein; and our Annual Budget. Members who willbe out of town during the Annual Meeting may contact the office to obtain an absentee ballot.

As a participating member of PVC, your attendance at our Annual Meeting is important. Participation means that you care enough to attend a short meeting and cast your vote. Participation means that the church does not have to send you a ballot at home and incur extra expense and time. Membership has privileges – you have a right to vote. Participation means you take your membership seriously.

Titanic: An Easter Parable

This year Easter will fall on the week of the 100 year anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. Just as Christ used the stories of his day to tell us what the Kingdom of God was like, we will use the story of Titanic as a lens through which to examine our own hearts.

It was supposed to be the pinnacle of human engineering and advancement in the world. So great was their confidence in this achievement, that Titanic began to be known as the ship that could not be sunk even before she put to sea. All classes of society would board the Titanic for her maiden voyage. They would have vastly different life stories. Some would be rich, some poor. Some would have achieved much in life, others were hoping for a new start in America.

They would all have one thing in common: they were boarding a ship that would sink.

Our religious efforts, no matter how extensive, will eventually sink without the resurrected life of Jesus Christ. May you find Him for the first time or rejoice yet again as we celebrate the Savior of the world.

“Torn” – A New Series beginning in January 2012

When our world comes crashing down, it does more than steal our peace. Something inside us tears. We feel broken, stranded – torn. We naturally ask the question “Why?” when we’re hurting. But you may be surprised that the Bible states another question matters more: “Who?” Who is worthy of our trust when our life is in pieces? You many be experiencing a time of such darkness that you wonder if you will ever find “normal” again or look toward the future with hope. In this message series, we’ll look at the topic of problems, sometimes called trials, and explore our questions as well as God’s answers – and even God’s mysteries. We’ll look at the practical ways to fight for joy, deal with anger and depression, and make the million tiny decisions that add up to a life committed to God, even when your heart is broken. It’s not about having better arguments for the purpose behind our suffering. It’s about our relationship with God – a relationship that can flourish even when our whys sometimes go answered.

You can tell Christmas is right around the corner because of the increased signage. There are more signs put up during thre Christmas holidays than at any other time of the year. In malls, neighborhoods, on television.

You would think that it’s impossible to miss Christmas in the United States. However, many people miss Christmas without even realizing it. This Christmas season, we’ll be looking at four signs that God gave to us in preparation for the birth of His Son. Not the impersonal kind all around us, but PERSONAL SIGNAGE, intended to bring comfort, peace and joy to your life.

God wants this Christmas to be the most meaningful Christmas that you have ever experienced. And if you are going to make that a reality, you’ll need to discern the signage.

Consumer or Consumed?

In Leviticus 6:13, while giving instructions to the priests about worship, it says, The fire must be kept burning on the altar continuously; it must not go out.

Can you imagine how much work it was to keep a fire going 24/7/365? History records for us that the fire burned continuously for 860 years! The fire went out when the people of God were carried off into captivity by the Babylonians. This happened because they were no longer captivated by the fact that they were the people of God. They turned away from God, chasing after the temporary rather than the treasure of knowing God!

It is not God’s responsibility to keep the fire burning in our hearts; it’s ours!
Are you a consumer of the things of God or are you consumed? To consume means to “engage fully”. A consumer simply eats all he can get.

All of us grow attachments to incidental things—and fail to venture forth where God leads. When we pray, do we pray like a consumer or like we are consumed? Do we live in spiritual pretense or spiritually intense?

There are a good number of people who don’t mind being touched by the fire of God, as long as it’s containable, or better said, controllable! As long as they determine its heat and intensity, they don’t mind being near the fire!

God loves to see the hearts of His people glowing towards Himself. God will never be satisfied just to touch you, He wants to consume you, (body, mind, soul, and spirit)! He wants everything.

God not only want to light a fire in you for Him! He wants you to become consumed by that fire!

The early Christians did not need a shot in the arm every Sunday to keep them going. They knew Jesus and they upset the world, worried the devil, and gave wicked rulers insomnia. They started something that jails couldn’t lock up, fire couldn’t burn, water couldn’t drown, and swords couldn’t kill. This world has never been moved by cold, calculating poeple, but by believers, with their hearts on fire.
We suffer today from a type of Christianity as dry as dust, as cold as ice, as pale as a corpse, and as dead as the Twins chances of going to the World Series. We are suffering from a lack of consumed hearts.

Are you a consumer, content to demand this or that from God to quell your temporal spiritual appetite? Or are you willing to become consumed, by the awesome power of God, the amazing beauty of Jesus and the empowering presence of His Spirit? As always, the choice is yours.

Everyone we see every day of our lives is either caught in or just coming out of or in between moving into some area of sin. There are sins of the flesh or spirit, unkown or known – Gal 5:19-21; 2 Cor 7:1; Ps 19:12 – and no one is immune Rom 3:23; 1 John 1:7-10.

I am thinking a lot about how to restore a person caught in sin these days from this verse:

Gal 6:1: ”Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin restore him gently. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted” .

2 Biblical principles on this:

First, the word for “restore” is used in Matthew 4 to describe what John and Andrew were doing to their fishing nets – “mending”. The word is used also in at least two other passages to describe what church leaders and the word of God are to do – “equip Christ followers for service” and being “adequately equipped for every good work” – Eph 4:12; 2 Tim 3:17.

So when we aim to resore someone caught in sin our mindset is more than just getting them out from under the guilt and onto holy living. The focus of restoration is God’s glory! It is about restoring them to fruitful and productive living for Him! Those fishing nets were not mended to look nice for fellow fisherman looking on but so that they could catch fish.

Second, “gently” (which means to be strong and controlled inwardly) restore them. Restoring sin captivated people is spiritual warfare. There are traps set for everyone around. Gentleness is one of the only two characteristics Jesus ever highlighted about Himself Matthew 11:28-30. It is counter intuitive for us to use gentleness in warfare but it is the way of Christ.

So when we aim to restore someone we do it in all humility and gentleness but with great power and confidence in Christ’s will and way.

Ground Zero is a term that will forever be associated with September 11, 2001. Most of us remember where we were when we heard that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. Even more etched in our memory is the moment when we watched both towers fall. From that point forward, we knew everything had changed. Nothing would stay the same.

Meeting Jesus Christ is always a Ground Zero moment. We see this throughout the Bible in story after story. Individuals meet Jesus Christ and their lives are transformed – forever.

Have you encountered Jesus Christ at your own Ground Zero?

Have you been truly transformed by His Gospel?

Are you spending yourself for His Kingdom?

Are you surrounding yourself with revolutionary relationships?

Do your actions, words, and lifestyle look like Jesus?

Is your worship more than just Sunday morning?

Our prayer is that our church would see 9-11-11 as a mark on our spiritual timeline that we would not look back from.
