“Disciple-making is the answer to every problem in the church.” I read this in Dallas Willard and John Ortberg’s book “Living in Christ’s Presence”. So I have been on the hunt to see if there’s truth to this humongous claim. Here are afew of my thoughts on it up to now…
Making disciples is Biblical! It is exactly what Christ commissioned His church to be all about until the end of the world! It is doable by every person in every generation and location! It does not require more money, more education, more status etc to do! It does require a dynamic relationship with the Spirit, word, a brave faith and love in action!
Jesus said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations…and I am with you until the end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20
By disciple-making I mean influencing one another in the family of God to be lifelong learners and followers of Jesus Christ all day every day. If we choose to follow Jesus in our thinking, attitudes, relationships and behavior all of the church’s problems would turn into opportunities for Christ’s will and way to be experienced as He intends. We would live out His command to be light and salt in a very scary and dark and decaying world. [Matthew 5:16-18] We would be problem solvers!
So lets think in our context here at Pleasant Valley on this disciple-making issue a bit… If Sunday morning worship and church attendance could have changed the world [solve problems] it would have been changed by now. Knowing this we have been telling stories about people in our church who are courageously getting involved in Sunday + One opportunities. Sunday + One is a call to you to follow Jesus in the real world beyond Sunday morning worship. Discipleship is all about following Jesus daily which is way more than anyone will get on a diet of a weekly service alone.
Christ intends us to trust Him in every aspect of our lives with every problem we face. He aims to turn us each into irresistible people that walk in this world as He did. He has given us all we need to be problem solvers in this problem saturated world. He has generously given us His Spirit, His word, one another and problems to solve by His power, truth and grace. We, the church, are the hope of the world. Christ-driven disciple-making is the solution to every problem in the church and in the world.
Disciple-making does not exist for the church! The church exists to make-disciples of Jesus Christ!
Please! Please! Please! Let us all know if there is a more effective way to solve problems and change our world than to daily and diligently follow Christ in the real world. Don’t just sit there. Either push back or jump in! Lets solve problems!
